Welcome to Central Texas!

We know your first questions as you consider a move are about schools and medical care. Our members find that the best source of information on school districts and doctors is other parents in the area. Please be aware, we are unable to provide recommendations on school districts or medical professionals - this is why we encourage you to become a DSACT member to connect with other parents in the area! We also have a resource titled “Choosing a School District for Your Child with Down syndrome” to help you make a decision about school districts.

If you have multiple states under consideration for a move, a wonderful resource for comparison is The Case for Inclusion, which develops scorecards for states on issues such as competitive employment, waiting lists, and more. We encourage all families considering a move to Texas to research schools, medical and community resources, and compare to your current circumstances and/or other options in order to make an informed decision.

Many parents and guardians have questions about healthcare resources and the Texas Medicaid Waivers program. While there is no Down syndrome clinic in Central Texas, there are clinics in Houston and Dallas. Other child, teen, and young adult members receive their medical care through their general pediatrician and/or Dell Children’s Medical Center’s specialty care services.
